Wireless Performance Explained

Advertised Speed of 5Ghz band

Theoretical 802.11ac speed on 5Ghz band (using 80Mhz channel, 256-QAM, 400 ns GI):

  • 4 spatial streams x 433.3 mbps/stream = 1733.2 mbps

This is classified as a “Top-Performer” and therefore the fastest 802.11ac wifi system.

1.2.208 (2017-11-02) (updated 2018-11-25)

Release 1.2.208 is a mandatory/automatic upgrade that was performed on November 2, 2017, at 2 am. Portals that were offline at that time will be immediately upgraded when placed back online.

Changes are:

  • Mesh traffic stability fix
    • Enhancements were added to improve performance in mesh systems with high-traffic conditions

1.2.203 (2017-10-03)

  • Improvements to simplify and speedup mesh setup and configuration
  • IEEE 802.11r
    • Also known as “fast roaming,” this is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard that allows fast and secure handoffs from one base station to another managed in a seamless manner.
  • Access point steering
    • A mesh technique where the Portal routers coordinate to proactively associate clients to the best Portal for range and performance.
  • Stability and bug fixes
    • This includes changes to improve the reliability of the links at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz.
  • Named SSH Port for DFS Master Spectrum Booster engine
    • Portal contains a dedicated spectrum booster engine that continually scans the environment for radar pulses, as well as measures the volume of traffic and interference in every channel. This engine consists of a separate radio, cpu, and memory. It makes local decisions about which channels your Portal should use. It will occasionally send data on channel traffic congestion to the Cloud. This allows multiple Portals to coordinate their channel selections to improve overall performance.
    • The radio in the spectrum booster engine has the hostname of “kafkagw.redwood.idl.com.” This was added in the latest update for name discovery purposes only of the spectrum booster. The SSH port is not visible on the internet. It is only visible on your home network.
    • We apologize that the addition of this name to the existing spectrum booster raised concerns.
    • Portal does not collect or report personally identifiable information. Portal never collects data regarding specific websites that you visit. We do not require you to provide any personal information to set up and use your Portal, and we will never sell your personal information. Privacy Policy https://portalwifi.com/legal
